The Runway Diva Says. . . Is an online advice column for aspiring models. As a 20 year veteran of the fashion industry as a plus sized model, I have found in my travels that most aspiring models, no matter their size, don't have a clue of the tools needed to become a successful model. Hopefully, I can help make their journey a little easier. Please Email me your questions to ORIGRUNWAYDIVA@aol.com

Mo'Nique's F.A.T. Chance 2006

Sharon:

I want to audition for Mo”Nique’s Fat Chance and I need some advice. I have modeled in the past and love it. I want to send a video in for the show, but I am at a loss. I have been looking around the web to get a glimpse at your video for tips, but haven’t been able to find any. My questions to you are:

What is the best way to portray myself to the Casting Crew? Should I be myself, or should I exhibit a more calm version of myself.

I really want to get back in to modeling. When I was modeling, I felt an overwhelming confidence in myself for being plus size that I have never felt before. I need and want that confidence back. I adore you and Mo’Nique and what the two of you are doing for women like us, and I want to be one of them.

As far as my picture. Should I just send a regular picture of myself or should I send Comp photos. I don’t have any yet, but if it’s best to send a comp photo – I will take some..

Help me out! I really want and need this, and it’s been a while since I have been on the scene and I need some tips.

Thank you!

And you are absolutely beautiful.

Myra

Hello Myra

Thank you for all of the wonderful compliments! They are much appreciated...as for Fat Chance 2006....If you are going to send a video...please let your true personality come through....That's what we want to see....who YOU are....not the watered down version of you. If you want to enclose a photo with your video...I am sure that's fine too....but you do NOT have to run out and have a comp card made just to submit for this show.

The first casting is this weekend in Miami, IF you can get to any of the other cities where the castings are being held, I would suggest you come in person....that's almost always your best bet.

Hi Sharon,

I was at the Casting Call yesterday in New York (Roseland Ballroom) but I didn't make it past the first round. My number was 2074.

I just want to say that it was pleasure to be there in the presence of so many big beautiful women and never before had I felt so comfortable in a crowd.

The only negative thing I have to say is that I was concerned that a skinny white man and a skinny white woman judged who went to the next round in my group. They only asked one question then didn't give you much time to answer.

Sharon, I wanted to at least shake your hand. You walked right by me, but my feet were so frozen from standing outside in the cold from 5:00am that I couldn't get up at that time. Anyway I hope to get to meet you in the future. Your participation in last years FAT CHANCE was such an inspiration for me, and by the wae I thought you should have won.

Keep up the good work, and let me say that it was an uplifting experience. Many greetings to Mo'Nique. I wish there were more events like that for plus size women.
